History of Durham Tees Valley Airport

Beginning as RAF Middleton-St-George in 1941, the airport seemed destined to be a military base since it was used by both the British Royal Air Force and the Canadian Air Force to house bomber planes during the war. Even after the war, the airbase was used by the military for advanced flight training.

From 1957 through 1963, the airport was an RAF aerodrome. It underwent extensive renovations to make it useful to the Royal Air Force. However, in 1963, when threats of war were no longer eminent, the decision was made to close the airbase. RAF no longer needed it.

In 1964 the airport with the improvements made by the military began being used for civil aviation. It came to be considered as the regional airport.

Having spent 1.4 million pounds to make the airport usable for commercial purposes, it was opened in 1966. Members of the Royal family of Sweden officially opened the airport. A flight to Manchester became the first commercial flight out of the airport.

The name was changed to the Durham Tees Valley Airport as it began to see increased usage by passengers. At last count over a million passengers use the airport each year.
