Time Line for History of Durham Tees Valley Airport

1941The airport began with the name of RAF Middleton-St-George. It housed bombers of the Canadian Air Force as well as the British Royal Air Force. After the end of the war, the airport was used for advanced flight training.
1957-1963The airbase acted as an RAF aerodrome during this time. A lot of airside renovation took place. The RAF airbase at Middleton-St-George closed.
1964The airport began being used for civil aviation. It became the regional commercial airport.
1966The reopening of the airport was accompanied by 1.4 million pounds being spent to make it usable for commercial purposes. The opening was officially opened by Swedish Royal family members. The first commercial flight was in this year, a trip to Manchester.

Growth of the airport, which had a name change to Durham Tees Valley Airport, has been steady since the beginnings of commercial flights. By now, over a million passengers pass through the airport each year.
